A dome camera can be mounted on the ceiling indoors or underneath an overhang outdoors

A dome camera is a security camera that contains a small electronic board camera mounted under a plexiglass dome. Some are designed to rotate in an arc for greater coverage. The are meant to be mounted on ceilings with the dome facing down. They can also be mounted in a protected outdoor area such as the overhang of an eave or walkway cover.

Dome cameras are also available with special plexiglass covers called armor domes. These are designed to withstand a blow from a hammer, thus preventing thieves or vandals from disabling them. Dome cameras are usually wired cameras with day/night capability. This means that they record in color during the day when there is plenty of available light, and switch to black and white at night when the amount of available light is low.
