A dome camera is a small electronic board camera that is mounted under a clear plastic dome. Designed to be mounted on interior ceilings and outdoor overhangs, they are mounted with the dome facing down, giving the camera a clear field of view. Some dome cameras use a special impact-resistant plastic to keep a burglar or vandal from disabling them. These are called armor dome cameras.
Dome cameras are available that can literally "see in the dark" because they can record images in the infrared range. Other dome cameras are available that rotate in a 360 degree arc to take in everything in the surrounding area. Dome cameras are immediately familiar to burglars and vandals - if you have one mounted in your home or business they will likely go somewhere else rather than risk being recorded on videotape.
